SCHOOL AMBASSADORS EXPERIENCE

A guided tour of the Lion’s inner sanctum by Brisbane Lions players is one of those things most of us can only dream about.

A guided tour of the Lion’s inner sanctum by Brisbane Lions players is one of those things most of us can only dream about.

But this was a reality for the 70 Brisbane AFL School Ambassadors who attended the 2011 AFLSA Induction Function on Friday at the ‘Gabba.

Teachers were treated to an intimate tour, lead by players Jamie Charman and Callum Bartlett, and were given a real insight into what training life is like for a Brisbane Lion.

Charman and Barlett also provided candid insight to the Club and their schooling days during an interview at the function, hosted by the Brisbane Lions and AFL Queensland. Charman was also announced as the Brisbane Lion’s official School Ambassador.

Lions’ General Manager of Football Operations, Dean Warren, also gave an interesting account of his transition from the AFL to the Brisbane Lions and his perception and outlook for 2011 and beyond.

Previously held as a breakfast, the new format this year also marked the launch of the 2011 MBF Schools Assist program, a wonderful initiative by MBF to help tackle childhood obesity.

Schools participating in the program in Brisbane are supported by MBF through the provision of equipment, with this year’s returning Ambassadors to receive ‘top-up’ packs of equipment, including footballs and markers, to their already donated AFL stocks from MBF.

The 21 schools new to the AFLSA/MBF Schools Assist program in 2011 will reap the rewards, with MBF donating the last three years of equipment to each of them. These schools will receive an entire set of AFL jumpers, an AFL Rec Football set including goal posts, bibs and tag belts, plus this year’s top up pack of footballs, net bag, coaching folder and markers, with 25 tickets to the Brisbane Lions versus North Melbourne match at the Gabba, known as the MBF Schools Assist Match Day.

In Brisbane alone there are 178 schools participating in the MBF Schools Assist program with 216 teachers playing the role of AFL School Ambassador in their school community.

School programs at AFL Queensland are proudly supported by AFL Sports Ready.
