The 2013 women’s state championships kick off on Thursday.
The state’s top female footy players will descend on the SEQ corner this week for the 2013 women’s state championships.
This year’s competition, running from April 25-27, is the biggest one yet, with SEQ split into a north and south team, while Capricornia is sending a team for the first time.
Cairns will once again be the ones to beat, after going through the 2012 champs undefeated to claim back-to-back titles.
The defending champions have plenty of experience in their ranks, including a number of North Cairns tigers.
North Cairns won the premiership in the Cairns competition, and their players will certainly add a lot of talent for the region’s bid at a three –peat.
AFL Queensland female programs manager, Julia Price, said the growth of the championships was a really positive sign.
“With nine teams in South East Queensland now, and two teams from the region in the championships, we are able to give more girls an opportunity to play a bit of rep footy.”
“There’s a mix of experience through the teams, but it’s really important to give as many girls as possible the chance to play in this kind of competition.”
With the Wide Bay, Mackay and Darling Downs regions all starting their own leagues this season, Price said the women’s state championships would only go up from here.
“In the next few years, we’re really looking to grow the competition,” she said.
“It’s a really exciting prospect.”
The championships will take place in South East Queensland, played at Leyshon Park, Yeronga, Giffin Park, Coorparoo and Kedron.
