A training Country Stockmen Squad for the 2012 Queensland Country Championship game has been named.
Country Stockmen selectors have a named a 36 man squad vying for final selection to face Cairns in the 2012 Queensland Country Championship game to be held in Cairns on June 10.
The squad includes former Adelaide Crow Matthew Shir who now plays with the Wilston Grange Gorillas.
Along with Shir a number of the Stockmen squad players bring NEAFL experience from last year.
Former Morning side Panthers Austin Lucy (now Mackay), Caleb Brown (now Mayne), Aspley trio Steve Brittain, Matthew Trewella and Shir (now Wilston Grange) and former Broadbeach midfielder Jesse Derrick (now Palm Beach Currumbin) have all had stints in the NEAFL.
Adding to the depth of talent will be former Gold Cast Sun signing Jesse Haberfield who now plays at Surfers Paradise.
The squad also comprising a great deal of regional talent with Stockmen’s coach Brett Maloney saying he was happy with how the selection process took place.
“We have had our scouts out and around all footy circles since round one reporting in every week,” Maloney said.
“We have a good balance of SEQAFL Div 1 players with our regional zones from the Darling Downs through to Wide Bay, Capricornia, MT Isa, Mackay and Townsville.
“I’m confident that the players that who will make final selections will represent their clubs and leagues with distinction.”
The Stockmen accounted for Cairns in 2010 at Coorparoo 19.6 (120) to 10.10 (70) but are expecting a stronger opposition in Cairns this time around.
Both teams will vie for positions in the Queensland Country Team to compete in the Australian Country Championship to be played in Wagga Wagga on July 19-22.
