The Suncoast Storm Under 17 team is heading off to play in the 2012 Kooga AFL Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships in Cairns from October 26-28
The team has been training for the championships since mid-September and concluded their preparations for the carnival with a jumper presentation on Wednesday October 24.
Chelsea Ansell (Coolum Beach) and Tayla Qualtrough (Kedron-Brisbane North) were voted by their peers as the inaugural co-captains of the team, with Morgan Whitney (Nambour & Hinterland), Tayla Harris (Zillmere-Brisbane North) and Mimi Hoger (Zillmere-Brisbane North) rounding out the leadership group to be named vice captains.
Being the first time that the region has nominated for the championships, the Storm team has been bolstered by the inclusion of a number of girls from the Brisbane region who will add age and experience to the team.
It will be an action-packed weekend for the girls who will arrive in Cairns on Friday and play their first game of the championships that afternoon against 2011 champions, the Brisbane Flames.
Saturday will see the Storm girls come up against the Southern Stars, Central Coast Cobras and the QANTASlink Crusaders, with their final game against the NQ Lions to be played on Sunday morning.
Assistant Coach Stacey French is excited to see what the results of training will bring when put into a game situation in Cairns.
“The girls have been training really well for the last 6 weeks and it has been great to see the girls from Brisbane North and the Sunshine Coast gel together as a team to represent the region,” Stacey said.
“Being a relatively young team, it will be a great opportunity for the girls to compete at a state level and experience what representative AFL has to offer and the pathways that are available.”
