After six months of monthly trainings in the AFL Qld Sunfire Academy, the Suns contingent defeated the Lions contingent 5.4.34 to 3.2.20 in an Under 12s version of the QClash.
Participants in the Sunfire Academy were selected in September last year from the Sunfire Superstars, Sunfire being the name of the Qld Women’s team. 34 year 6 & 7 girls were split into Lions & Suns teams early on dependent on their region and supplied with training jerseys in their respective colours.
Sunfire & two-time All-Australian player Katie Brennan was head coach of the Academy and was really pleased with the progress the girls had made with their football over the past six months.
A big thank you to both the Brisbane Lions & Gold Coast Suns for supporting the girls with player visits and tickets to the QClash on Saturday night.
Over 50% of the girls in the Academy have now continued on to club football particularly in the new Sunshine Coast Juniors U15 Youth Girls competition and Brisbane Juniors U15 Youth Girls Competition.
The Sunfire Academy will again be selected after the Sunfire Superstars carnival night on 7 September at Yeronga AFC later this year.
