Ten Queensland products are among 37 players that comprise part one of the inaugural AFL playing list of the Gold Coast Suns.
Marc Lock (pictured), captain of the club through their 2009-10 apprenticeship in the TAC Cup and VFL competitions, has won a senior list spot after previously being contracted only to 2010.
He joins inaugural signings Charlie Dixon, Zac Smith, Jack Stanlake and Rory Thompson, recent pick-ups Joey Daye, Rex Liddy and Lewis Moss, plus 2010 Queensland U18 team graduates Joel Wilkinson and Tom Hickey as graduates of the Queensland AFL system.
Hunt, former Brisbane Broncos and Australian rugby league ranks, is the 11th ‘local’ on a list lodged with the AFL last Friday but curiously overlooked by all mainstream media outlets.
The list will grow to 48 players following the upcoming NAB AFL National Draft, to be held on the Gold Coast on 18 November, with a further nine rookies to complete a 57-man playing roster for the club’s inaugural season in the AFL.
Alex Keath, an Australian U19 cricket representative last year who has been contracted by the Victorian Bushrangers, has been retained on the Suns senior list although he has indicated at this point that cricket is his preferred sporting pathway.
The remainder of the Suns list is made up of 12 elite 17-year-olds recruited over the past 18 months, eight uncontracted players lured from existing AFL clubs, four players signed in 2010 as over-age rookies, and NT zone signings Liam Patrick and Steven May.
The Suns inaugural list is:- Gary Ablett, Nathan Bock, Jared Brennan, Campbell Brown, Michael Coad, Joseph Daye, Charlie Dixon, Piers Flanagan, Josh Fraser, Jarrod Harbrow, Daniel Harris, Tom Hickey, Taylor Hine, Karmichael Hunt, Jack Hutchins, Sam Iles, Hayden Jolly, Alex Keath, Nathan Krakouer, Rex Liddy, Marc Lock, Brandon Matera, Steven May, Trent McKenzie, Lewis Moss, Tom Nicholls, Liam Patrick, Michael Rischitelli, Luke Russell, Matt Shaw, Zac Smith, Jack Stanlake, Danny Stanley, Rory Thompson, Joshua Toy, Maverick Weller, Joel Wilkinson.
