SUNSHINE COAST LIONS CUP UNDERWAY

The Brisbane Lions Cup is the major school competition open to all schools within Brisbane, Darling Downs, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay.

Sunshine Coast schools will this week fight it out for the Brisbane Lions Cup in the junior and senior divisions.

The winning schools from both divisions will compete against Wide-Bay and Brisbane North for the regional title and then potentially progress to the Brisbane Lions Cup Grand Final.

The senior draw was contested by St. Johns, Chancellor (pictured, in yellow and navy), St. Teresa’s, Caloundra (pictured, in blue), St. Andrews, Nambour and Coolum on Tuesday May 1 at Maroochydore Multi-Sport Complex, Fishermans Road.

St. Teresa’s dominated through the early rounds with convincing performances from Chancellor, Caloundra and St. Andrews.

The grand final was fought out between Caloundra and St. Teresa’s in drizzly conditions on oval two.

Caloundra came out firing kicking four straight goals leaving St. Teresa’s stunned but managed to kick a goal on the half time siren.

Caloundra ran out winners, 5-0-30 to 1-3-9 and will progress to the regional play-offs on Tuesday June 19.

The junior division is set to be a cracker with 12 school teams to take to the fields at Maroochydore on Friday May 4.

Kicking off at 9:30am, St Andrews, Chevallum, Glasshouse Country Christian College, Suncoast Christian College, Sunshine Coast Grammar and Mountain Creek will contest Pool A.

Pool B will be fought out between, St Thomas More, Pacific Paradise, Cooroy, Noosaville, Coolum and Stella Maris.

Sunshine Coast Development Officer, Dayne Frew said that the junior numbers are impressive and set the stage for an awesome competition.

“The response from schools has been overwhelming and we are really looking forward to the AFL talent that will be on display this week,” Frew said.

“It is great to organise and coordinate a school based competition with such an overwhelming response from teachers and students alike.

“It will be really interesting with what results come out of this week with strong teams from Caloundra and St. Teresa’s in the senior draw and Mountain Creek, St. Andrews and Pacific Paradise in the juniors.”
