With the QAFA (A) teams in the home stretch of the season, we thought it’s time to take a look at where they have been, and what is ahead of them in 2015. Check it out, club by club, below.
Griffith Moorooka
The past
12-1, and a percentage of 247%, it’s fair to say things are going well for Griffith Moorooka at this point in time. The only blight on their season so far is a round 7 loss to Bond University, the team expected to be their biggest challenge in 2015. Apart from that, it’s been a very dominant season, with their lowest winning margin being 18-points in their win over Ipswich. Their last month in particular has been excellent, sending a real statement to the rest of the competition.
The future
They have their first bye this weekend, before their final three games in 2015. Third place Southeast Suns will prove a handful in round 16, and there will be no cruising into finals, with round 18 game against Ipswich who pushed them last time. The beauty of being 12-1 is they have done the hard yards early, which means they are in control of their finals destiny, and are primed for a real crack at the flag this year.
Ashley Templar has been the go to man up forward this year, with 56 majors to his name, but the load has been shared through the midfield all year, a real strength of the Roosters.
Bond University
The pass
11 and zip, but not on top. It’s a weird situation to be in due to the two byes they have had, but confidence levels are sky high at the Shark Tank; in fact, they even went through the pre-season undefeated. They have got over the line in a few tight ones this year. Carrara pushed them in round 2, Griffith Moorooka got within seven points, and Ipswich came within eight. The main thing is though, they still came out ahead.
The future
They have a big opportunity to draw level in points with Griffith Moorooka, who have the bye, when they play Park Ridge this weekend. Their last three games against Redcliffe, Beenleigh and Wynnum shouldn’t prove much trouble for them, so they have a huge opportunity of going through the home and away season undefeated; a rare feat.
Jack Fox and Samual Makin are two keys to the way Bond have gone about it this year. Their leg speed and ability to break lines has been excellent.
Southeast Suns
The past
It was a new begging for the Southeast Suns this year, but it didn’t take them long to find their feet. They had a hard fought win over Par Ridge first start, and backed it up with a by banking another couple of wins over Redcliffe and Beenleigh in the following two weeks. Griffith Moorooka was too strong in round 5, but they rebounded with a very important win over Ipswich the next week. At 9-3, finals beckon in their first season.
The future
Three games and a bye remain for the Suns, and judging by form, they should finish the year at 11-4. They take on Wynnum this weekend, before a coming up against Griffith Moorooka the week after. It’ll be a tough ask, but getting over the line that game isn’t out of the question at all.
The Suns have had three players kick over 20 goals this season, in Jay Suban, Chris Fletcher and Chris Mitchell, meaning opposition teams can’t put all their defensive efforts into one player.
Carrara
The past
2015 didn’t get off to an ideal start for the Saints, going down by 31-points to Park Ridge in round 1, but they bounced back strongly with a big win over Ipswich the following week. They made it one all with Park Ridge in round 6, and got over the line against Redcliffe in round 8 by a solitary point. There biggest win of the year came in round 11 when they knocked off the Southeast Suns by a goal, the only team above them they have beaten this year to date.
The future
Carrara’s biggest game by far in the run home is their round 17 clash against Park Ridge. With the bye the week before, and Park Ridge right on their heels for forth spot, it is an eight point game, and a must win.
Rhys Nossiter has been excellent for the Saints all year, and Joel Campbell has managed 45 goals from 11 games.
Park Ridge
The past
All-square on the ledger at 6-6, but it’s been a successful year so far for Park Ridge, and they have kicked some big scores to boot. They couldn’t get over the top of the Southeast Suns in round 1, but had a couple of big wins against Pine Rivers and Ipswich in the following two weeks which really set their season up. Apart from a loss last start to Ipswich, they have beaten the teams they should, but haven’t been able to get the four points against the teams above them.
The future
It’s a pretty tough run home, with Bond and Carrara and Victoria Point in the next three weeks. With Victoria Point just four points behind, and with Park Ridge having the bye in the final round, they have to win at least one, maybe even two of those games to get into the finals. It’s going to be a big month!
Dylan Raabe hasn’t missed a beat this year for the Pirates, getting a lot of the footy and hitting the scoreboard as well.
Victoria Point
The past
It was a dream start for the Sharks, with a good win over Ipswich in round 1, but it has been a bit up and down from there. They won three on the trot over Redcliffe, Wynnum and Beenleigh, but would have been disappointed with their loss to Ipswich a couple of weeks later.
The future
Sitting just four points out of the five, with the bye out of the way, 2015 is heating right up for the Sharks. Carrara and Park Ridge and Carrara will be tough in the next fortnight, but then their run home against Redcliffe and Beenleigh could propel them into the finals series.
Liam Eddie has been the standout for Victoria Point this year. Having a super year.
Redcliffe
The past
It was a difficult first month for the Tigers, sitting at 0-4, but they have turned their season around since then. They got their first win against Park Ridge in round 7, but lost a heartbreaker to Carrara the next week. Wins over Beenleigh and Pine Rivers since have them just clear of the logjam on the ladder below them.
The future
It’s a 50/50 run home for the Tigers. They have a very good chance to beat Ipswich this weekend and Victoria Point in round 17, and then will have to play their best footy to beat both Bond and Carrara. It’s not completely far fetched though.
Joshua Bond has kicked 24 goals from his 11 games this year, and David Cook has been in the best seven times.
Ipswich
The past
Just the three wins and a draw for Ipswich this year, but they have really pushed a lot of teams. They lost their three, but a win against Beenleigh in round 5 and a draw against Wynumm a week later was where their season really turned around. They got within three goals of Griffith Moorooka and the Southeast Suns, and just went down to Bond University two weeks later. Nothing to be sneezed at.
The future
Four games in the run home, three of them very winnable. They take on Redcliffe, Beenleigh and Wynnum in the next three weeks, and should start favorites in at least two. If they can get to two and two for the last month, that would be a very positive finish to the year.
No surprises here, Rhan Hooper has been the standout this year, but he has been supported really well by Keith Brick.
Wynnum
The past
3-7, and even on points with Ipswich, their ladder position isn’t a true reflection of their competitiveness. They had a huge win over Pine Rivers in round 5, drew with Ipswich the following week, but lost by the bare minimum of margins against Victoria Point a week after that. Their last two games against Beenleigh and Griffith Moorooka have been disappointing, but have a month to make right of those results.
The future
They might be sitting ninth, but it’s so even around them they could easily push for seventh if results fall their way. The Suns this week, and Bond in the final round will be challenging, but they can really push for a couple of wins against Pine Rivers and Ipswich in rounds 16 and 17.
Dane Sutherland has been one to watch this year for the Vikings.
Pine Rivers
The past
The season started perfectly with a win over Carrara in round 1, but it has been pretty tough going from there. They would have to wait until round 9 to get their next four points, courtesy of a five-point win over Ipswich.
The future
They face Beenleigh this weekend, which they will consider themselves a big show in, as they will the following week against Wynnum, but the last two weeks don’t get too much tougher than Griffith Moorooka and the Southeast Suns. If they can win one of games in the run home, it will be a success.
Steven Rees may have only played seven games this year, but has kicked 16 goals.
Beenleigh
The past
Just the one win for Beenleigh in 2015, which came in round 12 over Wynnum by three-points. It hasn’t been the season they would have hoped for, but they have been in most games that have played for a majority of the afternoon.
The future
They have a huge game against Pine Rivers this weekend, and it will be their best chance of grabbing that second win. They would love to send the year out with a win, in their final game against Victoria Point in round 18.
Kyle Powe’s 33 goals this year has been an outstanding effort all things considered. He can hold his head high.
