Gold Coast SUNS’ Ellie Hampson has claimed the Round Six NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nomination following her impressive performance at the weekend.
Recruited as a 17-year-old foundation signing, Townsville local and SUNS Academy graduate, Hampson is the longest-serving AFLW player for the Gold Coast SUNS.
Bouncing back from injury sustained in her first two seasons, Hampson has quickly become a standout player for the SUNS, finishing with 16 disposals (10 contested), six tackles, six clearances and a goal in the side’s victory over Geelong Cats.
Hampson started her football journey playing footy at Annandale State School before playing club footy with the Hermit Park Tigers. Since calling Southeast Queensland home, she’s played with Coorparoo Kings and Bond University Bullsharks.
She was part of the Kings 2019 QAFLW Premiership and was named an Under 18 All-Australian as well as Queensland’s MVP at the 2019 AFL Women’s Under 18 Championships.
Fremantle Dockers’ Mikayla Morrison was also named as the Round Six NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nominee.
The NAB AFLW Rising Star winner will be announced at the 2022 W Awards.
All AFLW players born in 2001, 2002 or 2003 and who have not previously been nominated as a Rising Star qualify for consideration for the award.
Two players will be nominated each week of the NAB AFL Women’s Competition. Each of the 18 NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star nominees throughout the season will be awarded $500 prize money from NAB to acknowledge their great achievement. In addition, NAB will continue to support the development of future footy stars by awarding junior clubs of each nominee with a NAB Club Recognition Award pack of practical and financial resources, valued at $2000.
The overall NAB AFL Women’s Rising Star winner will be awarded $20,000 from NAB and a private banker to assist with securing their financial future.
