Ballenden back in business
After a relatively slow start in the NAB AFL U18 Academy Series, highly rated Brisbane Lions academy prospect Connor Ballenden is now in great form. Ballenden was up and about against the Sydney Swans Academy last week and was a presence again on the weekend at Broadbeach against the Giants Academy, flying for marks and sharing his time between the forward line and the ruck. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the Lions over the line against the Giants and they went down by four points.
Also at Broadbeach, the Gold Coast SUNS Academy ran out big winners over the Northern Territory, 109 to 27.
From the archives
This hanger from Sandgate captain Aaron Fabian was missed in QAFL round one. Such a spectacular grab definitely needs to be shared, so it has been dug out of the archives for the Tuesday Talking Points. Throughout the season, be sure to send any spectacular marks, goals or eye-catching play through to the @QAFL_QWAFL twitter account, or the AFLQ and QAFL facebook pages.
History calling
At Metricon Stadium on Saturday, with the first bounce of the Gold Coast verses Geelong clash, AFLQ football writer and NEAFL Media and Communications Manager Jessica Webster became just the second woman to commentate AFL play-by-play action for ABC grandstand radio. Jessica is well known for her work for the NEAFL and her book Gods of Thunder, about the NT Thunder football team.
Unsung heroes
From the 8th to the 14th of May it’s officially National Volunteer Week, so it’s time to turn around and say thanks to the people that keep our community organisations running. Stay tuned to aflq-new.fspdev.com for a short film featuring Jenny Clifford, a champion volunteer from the Pine Rivers Swans, who’s given 40 years of her time to her football club.
