The Queensland U16 Scorpions finished with a win, over NT, on Saturday.
The Queensland U16 Scorpions stormed home to finish their 2013 nationals campaign on a high, defeating NT 19.12 (126) – 9.5 (59).
Holding an 11-point lead at the final change ,the Queenslanders kicked nine in the last term to put to bed any chances of a Territorian comeback.
Queensland looked hungry from the get go, bursting out of the blocks, led by strong efforts from Cody Filewood and Corey Wagner, and taking a 26-point lead into quarter time.
Nate Dennis and Josh Elmslie dominated in the ruck, giving their midfielders all of the advantage from stoppages.
A strong third quarter from NT whittled a 21-point half-time lead back to less than two goals, due to some deadly accuracy in front of goals.
Heading into the final term, coach John Rankin reinforced the messages from pre-game, emphasising a team-first attitude and rallied his troops to finish strongly.
The address obviously had an impact with the Queenslanders having their most damaging term of the competition to run out 67-poitn victors.
Filewood starred for the Scorpions, slotting eight goals, while Elmslie and Adam Tipungwuti finished with three.
Defenders, Ben Keays and Nathaniel Ellis were rocks in defence, while Eric HIpwood and Hayden Jeffrey had their best games of the week, against NT.
Keays’ consistency over the championships won him the Scorpions’ MVP award.
With the final win Queensland finished second overall, behind winners NSW/ACT.
