Queensland’s 2013 nationals campaign suffered a major blow on Saturday, as the Scorpions slumped to a 69-point loss against Tasmania.
In their first Division two match of the competition, the Scorpions were beaten in every aspect of the game by the Tasmanians.
The home side slammed on eight goals to one in the opening half, putting the Scorpions on the back foot from the get go.
It only got worse after the major break for the Scorpions, with Tasmania piling on eight unanswered goals, after Queensland’s Aden Rutledge opened the scoring in the third term.
Tasmanian ruckman Toby Nankervis starred in the match, dominating at the stoppages and providing his midfielders with plenty of opportunities.
Midfielder Tyler Cornish battled hard all day, but it wasn’t enough in a disappointing performance from the Queenslanders.
A solid final quarter provided some positives for the Scorpions, holding Tasmania goalless, and kicking three themselves, to rein in the 82 point three-quarter time lead.
The result puts a major dent in the Scorpions’ title hopes, and they will need to lift ahead of their must-win clash against NSW/ACT on Saturday.
NSW/ACT will be brimming with confidence after blowing NT off the park on Saturday, in a 101-point win.
Queensland takes on NSW/ACT at 2:15 on Saturday at Melbourne’s Visy Park in Round 4 of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
