What is the Umpire4Fun program?

The Umpire4Fun program was created to develop and nurture umpires at grassroots level across community clubs in Queensland, aimed at participants 12 years and above to get involved in umpiring.

The program focuses on learning the fundamental skills of umpiring and developing knowledge of the game.

Umpires are recruited to join their local club as club umpires and officiate Junior fixture games at their home venue throughout the home and away season, including U8 Mixed, U9 Girls, U9 Mixed, U10 Mixed and U11 Girls age groups.

Club Umpire Coordinators are appointed to all clubs across Queensland to support and oversee the growth and development of individual umpires, as well as coordinate the appointments for umpires, umpire payments and uniform distribution for the program.

The Umpire4Fun program involves all umpire training, education, support and ongoing development for young and new umpires interested in beginning their umpiring journey.

Program inclusions:

  • Initial and ongoing training sessions throughout the Junior season – includes on-field sessions and online education sessions
  • 4 x on-field training sessions run at local venues close to your home club across South East Queensland to minimise travel requirements
  • Training session content aligned specifically to the fundamentals of umpiring and the Junior modified rules for U8 – U11 Girls fixtures
  • Training sessions run by League Umpire Coaches
  • Umpiring pathway opportunities for participants to transition from Umpire4Fun into Youth and Senior competitions at their own pace in the Field, Boundary and Goal disciplines

Umpires receive free of charge:

  • An Umpiring uniform (paid for by club, subsidised by AFL Queensland – includes on-field shirt, shorts, socks, hat)
  • An Umpiring handbook – outlining everything umpires need to know including modified rules for each age group
  • Match payments per game (rate set by the individual Club)
