TWEED Council and local State MP Geoff Provest have met with Tweed Coast Tigers Football Club and AFL Queensland to discuss a planned $94,000 stage one upgrade of the oval at Round Mountain Rd, Cabarita Beach.
Mayor Barry Longland said AFL was becoming popular in the Tweed.
“AFL has been the quickest growing emerging sport in the Tweed shire for a number of years and the Tweed Coast Tigers have had great success over this time,” Cr Longland said.
Rick van den Driest, president of the Tweed Coast Tigers junior club, said that even with a lack of facilities the junior club has grown consistently with around 120 members in five age-division teams.
Some of the improvements to the fields will include laser levelling of the oval to enhance drainage, improvement to drainage around the ground, fencing around the playing area and a realignment of the goal posts.
The club also has support from the NSW Government which is providing $21,594 through its community building partnerships program to fund the construction of the fence around the playing area.
Mr Provest said he was impressed by the club’s vision, its initiative to involve other sports in the venture and the Tigers’ forward thinking to divide the upgrade into a number of stages, to help secure funding assistance for each step.
