UQ & Caboolture want women’s teams

With the recent census figures coming out, Queensland has hit an all time high with over 40,000 women and girls participating in AFL from Auskick through to Women’s League.

Currently Brisbane has 7 teams in the Under 15 Youth Girls Competition, 4 teams in the Under 18 Youth Girls Competition and 7 team in the Women’s League.

On the back of this University of Qld Red Lions are keen to expand their club from its current 4 men’s team in Division 2 and 3 Seniors & Reserves to include a possible Women’s team in the 2013 season.

“With quite a few clubs already containing girls from Universities it made sense that the Red Lions look at including Women into their club” said Julia Price, AFL Qld Female Programs Manager.

For any enquiries regarding the University of Queensland Women’s team please contact Club President Peter Herring at [email protected] or 0415 415 998.

With the Club moving to a new location in 2013 both the Junior and Seniors are keen to introduce Women and Youth Girls teams to their club.

“Caboolture Lions JAFC is very excited and looking forward to fielding an U15s and U18s girls team for the 2013 season.  These are very exciting times for our club as we look towards moving into our new $12.2m state of the art facility during the 2013 season” said Junior Club Secretary Leanne Long.

The Senior Club is also excited about the prospect of having a Women’s team at their club with local players such as former Under 18 State player Ashleigh Hales (pictured) having to leave to play at other clubs due to their lack of a team.
