Former Wilston Grange great and Queensland Football Hall of Fame Inductee Graham Jewell has passed away.
Graham Jewell was born in 1945 and grew up in Coburg Victoria, where he was coached as a schoolboy by the great Hawthorn coach John Kennedy.
In 1960 his family moved to Queensland and settled in Grange. Graham was a key member of the 1962 U19’s premiership team and in 1963 was elevated onto the senior list.
By 1966, he had blossomed into an exciting high flying full forward. He continued his outstanding form in the following seasons, gaining state selection in 1968.
He would develop into a dominant Centre Half Forward / Ruckman with long arms, who regularly took freakish marks.
Graham was recruited by Hawthorn at the same time as Peter Hudson but chose to return ‘home’ to Queensland.
One of Graham great highlights of his football career was as a member of Wilston Grange’s second premiership in the QAFL in 1969.
He would go onto represent his state seven times and play 251 games with Wilston Grange from the late 1960s.
His QAFL career was interrupted only by a short stint as a premiership captain-coach in the Riverina with Mangoplah-Cookardina. He would also represent NSW in a match against Victoria where he kicked three goals.
Graham was awarded Life Membership of the Wilston Grange Football Club and was twice named club Person of the Year in 1966 and 1979. He was inducted into the Queensland Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and was inducted into the Wilston Grange Hall of Fame in June 2024.
AFL Queensland extends its deepest sympathy to Graham’s family, friends, and the Wilston Grange Football Club.
