Vale Ian Burrill

AFL Queensland Hall of Fame member Ian Burrill has passed away.

The Mackay football community is in mourning following the death of AFL stalwart Ian Burrill

The former Tasmanian had been a servant of Mackay football for over three decades, spending long periods on the board of various AFL controlling bodies.

Ian was instrumental in the funding and organisation of the former North Queensland Football Association (NQAFA) which managed the highly regarded NQ championships that, at different times, involved Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Mt Isa.

The backbone of the Baker’s Creek club for most of his time in Mackay, Ian was a Life Member of that club, AFL Mackay, NQAFA and the Queensland Country Football Council, where he served as Vice President for ten years.

Ian received many accolades for his contribution to football including the 1996 Special Merit Award and the 2000 Sports Medal. The Ian Burrill Medal is awarded each year to Mackay’s best player.

In 2008 Ian was inducted into the AFL Queensland Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to one of our State’s great champions of AFL.

Ian’s funeral will be held at the Sarina Crematorium, Sarina at 10.00am on Thursday April 26th April and afterwards mourners are invited to attend the Old Railway Hotel (formerly known as Langford’s Hotel) in Alfred Street.
