The AFL Wide Bay Takalvan’s women’s competition commences this weekend marking the first senior community football season in Queensland to get underway in 2022.
Aligning with the NAB AFL Women’s Premiership season, the Wide Bay women’s competition enters its fifth season growing in both on field numbers and competitiveness.
Six teams will contest the 2022 flag in a 13-week season with the top four to play finals.
The Hervey Bay Bombers took home their fourth consecutive Premiership in 2021 but it wasn’t without its challenges; ATW Eagles heartbreakingly suffered their first loss in the Grand Final.
Participation, Programs and Competition Lead – Wide Bay, Kieron Hyndman, said he believed the competition had gained great traction and momentum heading into its fifth year.
“Over the past four years the AFL Wide Bay Takalvans competition has been extremely successful in providing opportunities for aspiring female footballers across the region,” he said.
“With senior teams taking to the field tomorrow, some local youth girls have also started their football journey via the regions Youth Girls Development Program.
“In 2021, the program welcomed 35 participants, which then flowed into the regions first ever Youth Girls Brisbane Lions Academy.”
The Grand Final rematch between the Bombers and ATW headlines Round One action tomorrow, with Maryborough hosting Bay Power and Brothers traveling to Gympie.
In November, AFL Queensland announced it would manage the AFL Wide Bay competition.
