It’s taken 200 footballs, 2000 speccies and 1000 high fives to keep the ball rolling at the Wilston SS NAB AFL Auskick centre … not to mention the 400 snags consumed at the end of term super session.
With 183 participants, Wilston SS is Queensland’s largest Auskick centre and having that many loud, laughing and footy loving kids made for an awesome atmosphere over the 8 weeks, said AFL Queensland Development Coordinator Angus Armstrong.
“With that many kids and not the biggest oval I decided to offer a Tuesday session. We had a great take up with 40 students transferring over,” said Armstrong.
“I had an email from one parent who has three kids involved to say that her kids had a ball and that they started getting up early for school so they could spend time practicing their kicking,” he said.
The final session of term was a big one for the Wilston SS group with parents joining in en masse for the ever popular kids vs. parents’ game.
The speccy machine and other inflatables took a beating from the hordes while Lions mascot Bernie ‘Gabba’ Vegas got a rock star welcome like never before.
NAB Fortitude Valley branch manager David Phillips and his staff kindly supplied the sausages/bread for the post session BBQ and there was an eerie silence as kids stopped to scoff down the bangers amid rumours that some had gone back for fourths …
To finish up the day, Wilston Grange Junior Club President Rod Fidler gave Auskickers the heads up on how they can progress to club footy before each headed off into the sunshine with dreams of being the next Brisbane Lions’ star.
