In 2013 AFL Queensland delivered many game development programs that engaged people from multicultural backgrounds, promoted inclusion and used AFL as a vehicle to connect with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
MULTICULTURAL SCHOOLS PROGRAM & MULTICULTURAL SCHOOLS CUP
The Multicultural Schools Program (MSP) expanded in 2013 to include regions from across the South East, from north on the Sunshine Coast, to as far west as Toowoomba, and south to the Gold Coast.
Via the MSP, more than 1,500 participants were engaged from diverse backgrounds with the program culminating in the MSP Cup in Brisbane, and the Diversity Cup on the Gold Coast.
Murri School from Acacia Ridge won the girls’ competition, with St Pauls at Woodridge winning the boys’.
All participants and their families were provided with an opportunity to attend an AFL match at either the Gabba during Multicultural Round, or Metricon Stadium.
BACHAR HOULI CUP
In 2013 AFL Queensland launched its inaugural Bachar Houli Cup Islamic Schools competition with 200 participants from three schools: the Islamic College of Brisbane, Australian International and Milpera SHS. The program ran for six weeks in each school and culminated in the Bachar Houli Cup carnival, with six teams - three boys’ and three girls’ - taking part.
Participants had the opportunity to be selected in the Bachar Houli Academy Camp conducted in Melbourne.
UNITY CUP
AFL Queensland delivered its inaugural Unity Cup in 2013, with participants from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds from across
the state identified via school and community combines.
The Unity Cup featured two Indigenous teams, the North Queensland KickStart and South East Queensland KickStart teams, and two All Nations teams; one featuring players from Polynesian, African, Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds from across the state and the other from Toowoomba’s Sudanese community.
The Unity Cup will be used to select Queensland’s U15 KickStart and U15 All Nations state teams that will participate in their respective 2014 National Championships.
WORLD VIII TEAM
In 2013 AFL Queensland was represented at
the NAB AFL National Champions in Sydney by four U16 multicultural players in the World XVIII Team: Mabior Chol, Jason Lee, Calem Volker and emergency Rueben Williams.
