The fourth year of the Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy has been another busy one as we continue to aim to produce players capable of playing in the AFL.
This was the first year that both Queensland clubs had exclusive access to their respective zones, marking the end of the SUNS’ priority access to Queenslanders as part of their list concessions.
Already we have had our first 2013 Academy player graduate to the Brisbane Lions senior playing list via the AFL Club Academy bidding rule in early October, in Jono Freeman.
NEW INITIATIVES / ACTIVITIES FOR 2013:
✏ Academy Summer Development Pack, delivered to participants in the AFL Queensland regional talent programs within our zone.
✏ Academy Talent Identification Camps run in the April school holidays
✏ Introduction of an Academy High Performance Squad
✏ Academy staff in assistant coach roles with QLD U18/U16 state talent programs
✏
Academy U15 carnival with GC Suns and GWS Giants
✏ Two rookie search athletes this year made AFL Queensland state under age teams within six months of being identified.
ACADEMY AND THE FOOTBALL COMMUNITY:
✏ Academy staff provided training program framework for the AFLQ regional talent programs for both summer development and state championship programs.
✏ Academy staff assisted AFL Queensland with coach education programs for community & school level coaches and presented at AFLQ Level 1 & 2 coaching courses throughout the year.
✏ Academy staff helped plan the AFLQ Youth Girls Academy annual training program and then delivered practical coaching sessions.
THE PLAYERS:
✏ 200 players were officially registered
with the academy in 2013. Approximately another 35 players have participated in various parts of the training program either as talent identification athletes or junior club players invited to train for a limited period of time.
ACADEMY REGIONAL TRAINING CENTRES:
✏ Continued with the running of three Regional Training Centres in the Sunshine Coast, Darling Downs and Wide Bay areas, with six boys included Queensland state squads at various ages
ACADEMY CURRICULUM:
✏ Over 280 training sessions completed from November 2012– September 2013, 5 x 1⁄2 day training & testing sessions, and seven Academy games against either GC SUNS or QLD Schoolboys teams.
✏ Development of an online Academy hub, as well as teaching structures and game ideas using an advanced iPad teaching program.
TALENT IDENTIFICATION ACTIVITIES:
✏ In conjunction with AFL Queensland regional game development staff, the Academy continued to run the Future Stars (12 & 13yr olds) and Rookie Search (14 – 18yr olds) talent ID programs.
