LIONS POUNCE IN INAUGURAL NEAFL MACKAY ANZAC DAY CLASH
The Brisbane Lions Reserves trumped the Gold Coast SUNS Reserves 17.9.111 to 12.7.79 in an historic NEAFL ANZAC day clash at Harrup Park in Mackay.
The match was the first North East Australian Football League (NEAFL) match to be played at Harrup Park, following the annual City v Country clash between Mackay teams.
AFL Queensland chief executive Michael Conlan said the aim was to add to what was already a major local event.
“AFL has a significant connection with our armed services as a celebration of our Australian culture and has been played by our troops across the globe for over 100 years,” Conlan said.
“The Mackay AFL community has created a fantastic event to honour the Anzacs and we wanted to build on that in 2013 with the support of the Lions and SUNS.”
Under blue skies in front of a crowd of almost 4,000, the Lions, in particular Jordan Lisle, came out firing. After an impressive Jacob Gilbee snagged the first of his four goals for the SUNS, Lisle took control.
Benefitting from silver service from the boot of
Simon Black, as well as a strong breeze in the 55 direction Brisbane was heading, Lisle marked
four times on the lead in the first stanza, and
converted four goals to give his side a 13-point ascendancy at quarter time.
The second half was a closely-fought affair, but as gallantly as they fought the SUNS couldn’t bridge the gap, Brisbane kicking seven second- half goals to six and winning by the eventual 32 points.
