Umpiring in Queensland went from strength to strength in season 2013, with a number of improvements made across coaching, participation and talent development.
Umpiring development continued to grow with Pierce Field (State) and Cameron Williamson (Gold Coast/Northern Rivers) working towards recruitment and retention targets, with 1,300 participants engaged in umpiring for the first time in QLD.
UMPIRING DEVELOPMENT
Some key achievements for umpiring development in Queensland in 2013:
✏ A record 1,300 umpiring participants
✏ Cairns and Townsville adopted the Junior Football Umpiring Program for the first time
✏ The AFL Umpire Roadshow visited Capricornia, Mackay and Townsville
✏ Eight school based umpiring academies introduced in South East Queensland
NEAFL
Season 2013 saw many positive outcomes come from the AFL/NEAFL umpiring panel. Moving our training base to Coorparoo enabled us to create a professional and positive environment. Some of these successes included:
✏ Former state league field umpire Matt McKenzie promoted to the AFL Boundary panel
✏ AFL boundary umpire Aaron Deckys umpired 2 AFL finals
✏ Two NEAFL field umpires, Andrew Stephens and Aaron Hall, added to AFL rookie list
✏ Former player and second year umpire, Kayne Nund appointed to the TIS Cup Grand Final
✏ Andrew Stephens awarded Umpire of the Year for the fifth time in the last six years
✏ Nine NEAFL field umpires running under the AFL 5km time trial benchmark
✏ The inaugural NEAFL Development Squad for field umpires was formed to ensure
a smoother transition from community to NEAFL football

✏ The North Queensland Umpiring Academy was established
✏ Queensland field umpires Chris Jardine and Andrew Adair selected to officiate at the U15 National Schoolboy Championships in Darwin
✏ Two field umpires also selected to officiate at the U12 Nationals in Darwin – Tim Somerville and Ben Moeller (Wide Bay). Luca Bisogni from Northern Rivers Juniors was also selected to umpire for New South Wales.
✏ Club Umpire Program rolled out across all SEQAFL Clubs
✏ First all-female Field Umpiring Academy set up in consultation with the Indigenous Leadership Program at Brisbane Christian College
✏ Umpire coaches once again participated in the AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program to help build their coaching and management skills
✏ AFL Queensland Umpire Coach of the Year award re-established and awarded to Tony Hunter from AFL Northern Rivers Juniors
