The Aspley Hornets took out the 2014 NEAFL premiership in astounding circumstances, with Daniel Smith goaling after the siren to secure a 15.12 (102) to 15.10 (100) victory.
The Hornets led by nine points at half-time, but Sydney looked to have done enough to secure their maiden NEAFL flag after booting seven unanswered goals in the third term.
However, Aspley produced a stirring comeback as they had 11 final term scoring shots, to run out winners in the best grand final seen in the short history of the NEAFL.
Aspley’s NEAFL MVP Matthew Payne, who had been effectively blanketed by the combination of Dan Robinson and Zak Jones up until three-quarter time, was influential in the final term.
He had eight crucial final quarter disposals, including the goal that initially gave the Hornets the lead, in an inspired 30 minute burst.
Earlier in the game, Tim Membrey (five goals) looked to be the match-winner for the Swans as he looked dangerous at every opportunity he was presented, while Xavier Richards was doing a fine job on Aspley livewire Eddie Sansbury.

But it was the ability of the Aspley midfield led by Payne, Ryan Matthews (26 up until three quarter time, which proved to be the difference.
The game was a fitting end to the first truly unified NEAFL competition, and Aspley’s premiership triumph is indicative of how much the ‘local’ clubs have improved since 2011.
The win also added to Aspley coach John Blair’s unrivalled CV in Queensland football, and he rated the win as one of the best he’s been involved in as a coach.
“The ability of this team to rise up and play for each other is something that I knew would ensure the game was always within reach (even when we trailed by 31 points),” Blair said.
“I was working with a special group this season.
“The work and commitment that they have shown since last November to the task put before us has been truly inspiring.”
“The win today is great for this competition, the club and football in Queensland.”
