NORTH QUEENSLAND » MATT WALSH Matt Walsh has achieved almost every milestone possible in the Cairns football arena, with
the most impressive yet to come.
Admired for his keen football brain and boasting one of the most reliable boots in the competition, the Cairns Saints full forward is now only 36 straight kicks away from his 1000th goal. He is set to become the first player ever in Cairns to achieve such a feat.
In a career spanning almost 18 senior seasons, Walsh has won five premierships in the Far North, two league best and fairest honours and has kicked over 100 goals per season a remarkable six times.
He’s been a solid contributor to footy across the board, both as a fierce competitor on the field and as an advocate for AFL development in North Queensland.
North Queensland coach John Tootell jokingly suggests there are plenty of full backs in the comp longing for the day Walsh hangs up his boots.
Tootle says Walsh has become a bit of an icon in the league, but a humble one who appreciates the honour of being selected to play representative footy and is well respected by his peers.
“Matt’s a great person on and off the field and a great leader - that’s what he brings to every facet of football,” Tootle said.
“He loves the game”.
