Several projects of strategic significance also commenced during the year. The Brisbane No h Training & Administration Centre
at Zillmere underwent a long- overdue refurbishment. Works will continue over summer to deliver
a much-needed li to one of our most-impo ant ovals. Ground
was broken on the construction of two major new facilities at No h Shore, Townsville, and South Pine Spo s Complex at Brendale in no h-western Brisbane. State League precinct upgrades are
well advanced at Wilston Grange and University of Queensland, and planning has advanced on major projects in Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, Ipswich and Moggill.
AFL Queensland also announced the creation of a new AFL Diversity Academy at CJ Greenfield Spo s
Complex in Inala. That facility
will provide a home for AFL Queensland’s Diversity programs and fu her grow the game in Brisbane’s strategically impo ant south-western growth corridor. It complements a fu her upgrade
of AFL Cape York House in Cairns, which continues its fantastic work in suppo ing our remote Indigenous programs in the Far No h.
With federal and local elections
to be held in 2016 we hope that more funding will become available to fu her realise our facilities strategy. Clubs are encouraged to engage with their local members of parliament and councillors to highlight their facilities needs and request funding suppo . E o s should be made to apply for
grants to complete minor facilities projects at least once each year
and we encourage clubs with prospective projects to discuss their plans with AFLQ to find out how we can assist.
Lastly, it was another successful year for our Queensland Spo s Tu unit, which manages tu maintenance at a large number of facilities across South-East Queensland. The crew constructed two new ovals and improved the standard of many others. We are always seeking tu management oppo unities and welcome discussion with clubs seeking to develop their green spaces in 2016.
