GOLD COAST
The Gold Coast region continued to grow with 22,853 participants in 2012, up 11.65% from 2011.
The AFL Gold Coast Juniors had yet another successful year with 2,675 members marking an increase of 23% over season 2011.
In 2012 AFLGCJ introduced an Under 15 Youth Girls Competition which saw three new teams (with around 60 girls) compete on a weekly basis. We also introduced the Super 6 program to cater for 5 to 6-year-olds in the club system.
Twenty-twelve also saw the introduction of the Western Rim Competition, which featured the Fassifern Falcons, Beaudesert Brumbies, Jimboomba Redbacks and Mt Tamborine Hawks junior teams playing a round robin format.
The league is looking forward to a very successful 2013 season, and with the Gold Coast SUNS growing in strength we are concentrating on utilising their success to further promote AFL on the Gold Coast.
In an AFL first, the Kinderkick pilot program was launched on the Gold Coast at Coomera Anglican College Early Learning Centre. The program is a six week gross motor skills program, aimed not only at promoting AFL to a new demographic but providing an educational program to preschool students. The Kinderkick pilot
was a resounding success and we are looking forward to rolling the program out in 2013.
In another first, the Under 16 Stingrays team was divided into North and South which allowed for an extra twenty-five players to be a part of the talent program and develop their on and off field skills. Both teams were competitive at the carnival. The Under
14 South team showed the split system is working, winning their carnival despite the challenging weather.
Our promo team continued to be successful in promoting and creating awareness of AFL and the Gold Coast SUNS in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers region. In an exceptional effort, the team spread the word to over 135,000 people in the community. In 2012 the team saw 15,000 fans (9% of the total game
day crowd) go through the gates of the Gold Coast SUNS AFL Playground. The Promo team travelled to Cairns in July where the Playground attendance was over 10% of the sellout crowd, another fantastic effort.
