BRISBANE NORTH
In 2012 the Brisbane North region achieved some significant growth via or participation programs while continuing to expand on our footprint in the key growth markets of Cadbury AFL 9s, multicultural, indigenous, and female and growth areas such as North Moreton Bay.
As a region we achieved overall participation growth of 10%
on 2011, with 20,528 participants playing AFL via our NAB AFL Auskick, school, social and club environments within the region. Our growth was achieved via increases in schools 9.05%, AFL Auskick 3.5%, club 2.7% and social 337%.
One of the 2012 Brisbane North regional highlights included implementing the Learning Earning Active Places (LEAP) indigenous program, in partnership with the department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs (ATSIA), and the Caboolture Lions JAFC. The LEAP program was achieved by accessing funding through ATSIA and LEAP to engage 5 – 17 year olds in the indigenous community via AFL Auskick, Youth AFL Combines, AFL Indigenous round at the Gabba and a community gala day. The “LEAP into AFL at Caboolture” program concluded with 15 scholarships being awarded to participants from the program to the Caboolture football covering club registration, shorts, polo’s and football boots.
Another highlight in 2012 was the strong interest and participation from the Brisbane North region in the rebranded AFL 9s program conducted at four clubs within the region. Northsiders came out
in force to support the program with just shy of 1000 players participating in 2012, this was up from 270 participants in 2011.
In 2012 we welcomed the Elimbah Meteors to the Brisbane North region, the Meteors were nurtured along in their first season under the Caboolture Lions banner and played in the AFL Brisbane Juniors U6, U8 and U10 North Maroon competitions. The Meteors will play as Elimbah in the 2013 AFLBJ season.
Via our Brisbane North engagement programs in 2012 we ran school clinics with Japanese exchange students at various schools, clinics with Autism Queensland at their North Brisbane base at Brighton, partnered with the Sudanese Community Association of Queensland in the delivery of a series of multisport gala days, and conducted an Indigenous combine at Nudgee College.
In 2012 Brisbane North talent programs achieved some great outcome, players from the region were selected for various higher representative honours, the Northern Raiders U16 were the 2012 state championshs and the Metropolitan North U12 were the state school boy’s champions.
