BRISBANE WEST
In the early part of the year the region had a big focus on supporting the newly formed Fassifern AFL Club by doing clinics, conducting Auskick, school competitions and attending weekend community functions to promote the club in the region.
The Ferny Grove Falcons have celebrated its 25th year as a club and had a function on August 25 to celebrate, with many past players and committee attending.
With Female Football on the upward spiral we saw Ipswich form a new Under 15 team and Moorooka, a senior women’s team.
In a new initiative, ten girls completed the Western Taipans summer program alongside the Under 16 Taipans boys. The girls more than held their own during the drills and competition work and we look forward to their involvement again in the upcoming summer training.
The summer program was ramped up by increasing the pool of players and operating an individual age-group on each night of the week, starting with Under 12’s on Mondays and finishing the week with Under 16’s on Fridays.
Over 30 coaches were involved, some who have coached at state level including Neville Miller, Danny Craven and current state Under 18 coaches Pat Garner and Ray Windsor.
Our Under 14 Taipans were named joint winners of the State Championships with the final unable to be played due to extremely wet weather at the Sunshine Coast. Alternate arrangements
to play the final came to no avail as we were thwarted by the
rain over the next two weeks. The Under 16 team performed particularly well and improved on every outing.
As a Game Development region we reached our participation target of 17,200 with a total of 17,600 participants - an increase of 2.33% in what has been a massive year for AFL Queensland in Brisbane West.
