BRISBANE SOUTH EAST
This year the Brisbane South East Region had a significant turnover of staff including a new Development Manager, NAB AFL Auskick and Club Coordinator. This did not stop the region from achieving a growth of 29% in participation figures, highlighted by above target Auskick numbers and school participants reaching record numbers.
A number of new Auskick and Schools strategies were implemented, allowing growth that ensured we matched our quality of delivery with an increase in new participants and the retention and catering of existing participants.
We launched Brisbane’s inaugural Multicultural Schools Football Program (MSFP) which led to the appointment of Zimbabwean national Keith Shangare to the position of MSFP Leader.
Aligned with the national direction of building our multicultural capacity, Keith was able to develop significant relationships with six schools who participated in the program. The MSFP culminated in the Multicultural Schools Cup day at the Clem Jones Centre - a unique event which saw over 650 primarily multicultural students experience AFL for the first time.
Another highlight was the Brisbane South East School Holiday Camp which attracted 131 participants over two days. Boys and girls had the opportunity to test their football skills in fun games and activities with visits from Brisbane Lions Players and club mascot Bernie ‘Gabba’ Vegas.
Our South Eastern Bushrangers Talented Player Program this year aimed to foster the development of young leaders, whilst
building football capacity and nurturing skills. Our well regarded head coaches Darryl Steven and Scott Easdown further enhanced their reputations as both Under 16 and Under 14 groups trained, learned and played with commitment, integrity, respect, loyalty and honesty; serving the ‘Bushies’ proud.
