Queensland coaches also attended the National Coaches Conference in Sydney at Allphones Arena in February. Clubs who obtained Government Funding were proactive in utilising grants in up-skilling their coaches.
MASTER CLASS UPDATES
AFL Queensland trialled a new look Master Class Update Series for community coaches in 2012.
The concept involves briefing coaches on cutting edge AFL coaching techniques with a focus on the roles of assistant coaches, development required for community players transitioning into
the AFL, systems, Talent ID and what AFL recruiters and Academy coaches are looking for in players.
The first Master Class Update was held prior to the Richmond vs Gold Coast SUNS game in Cairns.
Richmond coaches Ross Smith and Tim Livingston spoke on the role of their coaches during the week and on match day and the way they communicate to each other and players. They then demonstrated how linking the roles for community coaches is a way of extending the coaching panel at club level.
Shane O’Bree answered questions from the floor on life as a first year recruit, and areas community coaches could assist in player transition.
Experienced AFL Recruiter Noel Judkins also gave a great presentation on talent identification highlighting the importance of getting all the basic skill development right from an early age.
