The main game kicked off at 4.40pm and was the first AFL premiership match to be played under lights in Tropical North Queensland.
The match did not disappoint, with a storybook ending that GC SUNS fans will be talking about for years to come.
The Tigers looked to have the game in the bag late in the final term, having clawed their way back from a 34-point deficit in the second quarter.
The Gold Coast SUNS salvation came in the form of Trent McKenzie, who booted a bomb from outside 50 to bring the margin back to 10-points. Jarrod Harbrow snuck a second goal to make it a one-kick game.
With 30-seconds left on the clock the GC SUNS gained the final clearance via McKenzie. Brandon Matera grabbed the ball deep in the pocket, passed off to Karmichael Hunt who marked just before the final siren blew.
A composed Hunt kicked truly, giving the GC SUNS their second consecutive win over the Tigers at Cazalys, and Cairns’ fans a match they won’t forget any time soon.
The Toyota AFL Premiership match between Richmond and the Gold Coast SUNS was supported by the Queensland Government, through Events Queensland, as part of a growing calendar of sporting, cultural and regional events across the State.
