OBITUARIES
FAREWELL
AFL Queensland said goodbye to five of our own in 2012 – AFL Queensland Hall of Fame members Ray Marshall and Ian Burrill, Former Morningside President Barry Kelly, AFL Capricornia Volunteer Lawrie King and Gold Coast Development Officer Sam Brow.
We pay tribute to their contribution to AFL in Queensland together with other members of the football community who passed away in 2012.
RAY MARSHALL
Queensland Hall of Fame member Ray Marshall passed away in September at the age of 86.
One of the great full forwards of the 1950s, Ray was the Windsor spearhead towards the end of the club’s domination of Queensland football.
Relatively small for a full forward, Ray compensated with great pace and a strong mark and developed a magnificent combination with Jim Trewick.
His spectacular high flying finger tip marks and prolific goal-scoring were credited with a resurgence of spectator interest in the code in matches at Perry Park.
A three-time Hughson Medallist, Ray was also the first player in Queensland to kick 100 goals in a season.
Ray played six games for Queensland in 1949-50 and ended his career with Coorparoo.
IAN BURRILL
Ian Burrill was servant of Mackay football for over three decades, spending long periods on the board of various AFL controlling bodies.
Ian was instrumental in the funding and organisation of the former North Queensland Football Association (NQAFA) which managed the highly regarded NQ championships that, at different times, involved Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Mount Isa.
The backbone of the Baker’s Creek club for most of his time in Mackay, Ian was a Life Member of that club, AFL Mackay, NQAFA and the Queensland Country Football Council, where he served as Vice President for ten years.
Ian received many accolades for his contribution to football including the 1996 Special Merit Award and the 2000 Sports Medal. The Ian Burrill Medal is awarded each year to Mackay’s best player.
In 2008 Ian was inducted into the AFL Queensland Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to one of our State’s great champions of AFL.
