SEASON SNAPSHOT:
After losing a number of club stalwarts to retirement in the off- season and with three players drafted to AFL clubs, 2012 was always going to be a difficult time for the Panthers to achieve the on-field success of recent years.
In his first year as a senior coach, former player Aaron Rogers knew his primary task would be to re-build the club with a talented group of youngsters and focus on Morningside’s long term future.
This year a total of 22 players debuted for the Panthers as the club gave its young guns a taste of senior NEAFL football.
Six players; Michael Wyld, Ben McNiece, Jackson Starcevich, Henry Joyce, Josh Smith and Jesse Wallin were nominated for
the Northern Conference Rising Star award and an incredible nine players; Michael Wyld, Josh Smith, Brian Coleman-Broome, Rhys Power, Jordon Bourke, Ryan Johnson, Will Wolbers, Jesse Wallin and Alex Hall were selected to play for Queensland Under 18 state team.
The highlight of the season was the Panthers’ very impressive form in the national Foxtel Cup competition.
After a great Round 1 victory against Launceston at Metricon Stadium, the Panthers caused the upset of the competition by defeating Port Adelaide at AAMI stadium.
This against-the-odds victory in Adelaide must be considered one of the greatest wins of any Queensland team in history.
The fairytale run for Morningside came to an end in the Semi Final at the GABBA, when the powerful Werribee team were simply too strong for Morningside.
