QLD/NT V NSW/ACT OPEN
QLD/NT DOMINATE IN STATE CLASH
Halfway through the opening quarter of May’s state clash at Southport QLD/NT coach Jason Cotter admits to feeling a little uneasy.
NSW/ACT had just kicked 4 straight goals - 2 coming from Hills Eagles dynamo Ross Tangatalum - and was looking dangerous.
“Coach was a bit worried,” said Cotter.
“The flying start was a bit of a concern but our boys responded well in the second half of the quarter and the rest is history as they say.”
That history involves a 145 point drubbing of the opposition with the final score line reading QLD/NT 35.15 (201) to NSW/ACT 8.8 (56)
Despite the shaky start QLD/NT responded with five goals in the back 15 minutes of the opening term and went into the first break with a 12-point lead.
Queensland dominated possession early in the second quarter and despite struggling to convert, strong pressure on the kick-outs made it almost impossible for the Blues to clear the ball out of their back half.
It was only a matter of time before QLD/NT broke through, and how they did, scoring 8.8 to 1.3 for the quarter and earning a 61-point lead going into the main break.
Classy NT midfielder Cameron Ilett was a standout in the second term with two goals and swag of possessions, while hard working Kallen Geary took Tangatalum out of the match.
