QLD/NT V NSW/ACT UNDER 21S
Coach John Blair’s faith in his young team was amply rewarded with QLD/NT claiming a confident 13.13 (91) to 6.10 (46) victory over the Under 21 NSW/ACT side at Southport in May.
The first 15 minutes were an arm wrestle with both teams struggling to take hard marks in their forward 50.
QLD/NT settled first and goals from Wilson, Staunton, Grewer and Mallan saw the Northerners head into quarter time with a handy 21-point lead.
NSW/ACT lifted their intensity in the second quarter and when Potter put one through for the Blues in the opening minute it looked like it could be game on.
Good defensive work from Brendan Colch, Tom Fields and Luke Shreeve for QLD/NT helped repel the Blues’ surge while Kieren Emery was proving the difference up forward.
The Northern Conference boys were finding it too easy to bring the ball back out of the 50 and the half time siren saw them hold a comfortable 9.6 (60) to 2.2 (14) lead.
The first five minutes of the third quarter saw most of the play in the QLD/NT forward line but the home side couldn’t convert.
NSW/ACT increased their effort and urgency and a couple of quick goals had them looking to get back into the game.
