SLOW START COSTS U18 SCORPIONS IN 2013 CAMPAIGN
The Queensland Scorpions unearthed some more of the state’s top talents this season.
After a loss in their lead-in TAC Cup match against the Calder Cannons, the Scorpions travelled to North Queensland for a training camp for the first time.
As part of that camp, the Scorpions took on an U25 North Queensland team, notching up their first win of the year.
In their first official National Championship match, the Scorpions showed vast progress, in a 40-point loss to Vic Metro.
Queensland’s defensive pressure was far- improved from their earlier matches, keeping them only three goals down at three-quarter time, before the Victorians ran home well.
Round Two saw the Scorpions take on eventual Division One Champions, South Australia, in a disappointing 100-point loss at Southport.
In the final three games of the championships, the Scorpions took on their Division Two rivals, starting with Tasmania.
Travelling to Hobart for the match, the Scorpions were served a bit of a reality check against Tasmania, going down by 69 points.
Queensland kept its hopes of winning the Division Two title alive with a nail-biting win over the NSW/ ACT Rams in round four, played in Melbourne.
After kicking only three goals to three- quarter time, the Scorpions kicked five goals in the final term and kept the Rams scoreless, to nab their first win of the championships.
They finished on
a high, with their second straight
win, defeating NT by three points to wrap up their nationals campaign.
Aspley’s Liam Dawson was awarded the Harrison Medal, as the best player in Division Two, and was the state’s sole All-Australian inclusion.
Dawson, Broadbeach’s Lachlan Weller and Morningside’s Matthew Hammelman were all included in the 2013/14 AIS-AFL Academy Level Two Squad
at the conclusion of the competition.
