The Queensland U16 Scorpions came home strongly to finish runner-up in the 2013 NAB AFL U16 National Championships.
With one win, the Scorpions finished second to NSW/ACT in this year’s championships, held in Blacktown, NSW.
The team had a challenging start to their campaign, going down to NSW/ACT in the first round of the competition.
It was an uphill battle for the Queenslanders, after they conceded the first four goals of the game, but they fought hard to clinch a one-point lead in the final term, before the Rams kicked two in a row to seal the match.
Despite a strong second half against Tasmania, the Scorpions were still winless after two games, going down by 17 points.
Rising star, Tom Michael, had a strong say on the match with three goals, while Corey Wagner and Adam Tipungwuti stood up in the attacking half.
The Young Scorpions managed to notch a final win against the NT, which put them in second place after NSW/ACT defeated Tasmania.
In an impressive final round performance, Queensland ran out 73-point winners over the Thunder, including an eight-goal haul from Cody Filewood.
Leading by only 11 points at the final change, the Scorpions finished superbly with a nine- goal final term, earning them second place.
Queensland came the closest to the Rams through the week-long competition, with their 21-point loss.
Defender Ben Keays won the team’s Most Valuable Player award for his
consistent performances across the carnival.
At the conclusion of the competition, Cape York’s
Didymus Blanket was named in the 2013/14 AIS-AFL Level 1 Squad.
