QUEENSLANDERS MAKE HISTORY AT THE MCG
Seven Queenslanders were selected in the inaugural AFL Women’s Draft held in Melbourne.
The Melbourne and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs selected 50 women to play a Women’s Exhibition match during AFL Women’s Round on Saturday June 29 at the MCG; the first time AFL clubs have competed in an AFL sanctioned women’s match.
Aasta O’Connor, Katie Brennan, Kate Lutkins, Ally Anderson, Emily Bates and Natalie Thomas were selected by the Western Bulldogs.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to play against such a high calibre of players,
and also to play at the MCG,” Thomas said.
O’Connor was the fourth player picked overall, and the first Queensland player to secure a place with the Bulldogs.
Former Australian soccer international and #20 pick Natalie Thomas was excited at the prospect of playing AFL at such a competitive level.
Leah Kaslar was the sole Queensland player selected by Melbourne.
“I love playing football because I love the competitive and physical side of it,” Kaslar said.
