WIDE BAY
HIGHLIGHTS
• The Brisbane Lions Community Camp at the beginning of the year was
a huge highlight for the Wide Bay region with eight players visiting the Fraser Coast and eight in Bundaberg. The event was a great kick-start to the year, helping with our sign-on numbers.
• The league was successful in receiving funding to run a volunteer and education workshop for club volunteers in the region. This was well received in the community and well represented by the clubs. It helped the clubs establish contacts with each other and key AFL Queensland staff.
• The introduction of the U7 competition was a major highlight. We were able to get six teams together across the region, giving the boys and girls an opportunity to play in an organised competition; a fantastic follow
on from their Auskick program. This also helped the Fraser Coast junior competition have its most successful competition in terms of player numbers.
• Wide Bay entered its first stand-alone side in the Youth Girls State Championships. This included girls from across the region including Gayndah, Childers, Gin Gin, Maryborough, Bauple, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay. We also ran our first U17 girls competition which took place after school, through the local school community. This will be a huge step forward in growing female AFL in the region.
