INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS CUP
In a big step forward for independent school football, the annual Queensland Independent Schools Cup ran a stand-alone division for GPS Schools across year’s eight to twelve in term 2, with Anglican Church Grammar taking out the major trophy, the Jason Dunstall Cup.
The Gold Coast recognised the status of AFL within their independent schools system elevating our sport to ‘APS 1’, bringing it in line with rugby and other mainstream sports.
NORTHERN STATES CUP
Queensland hosted the Northern States Cup in September, the first time it had been held outside Sydney in its five year history.
The Cup sees the best Under 14 boys’ teams from New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Queensland go head- to-head to decide the best school team from the ‘developing’ AFL states.
Both Queensland representative teams did the state proud, with Palm Beach-Currumbin SHS taking the title for the third year running against a strong Xavier High School (NSW), and Villanova College winning the consolation final against the Northern Territory’s Dripstone Middle School.
