NATIONAL WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS HEAT UP IN CAIRNS
With AFL Cairns declaring 2013 “The Year of Women in Football”, the city proved a fitting host for the 13th National Women’s Championships in June.
Cazaly’s Stadium was the perfect showcase for the country’s best female football talent against the backdrop of Cairns’ famed winter sunshine.
Eight teams battled it out across two divisions, with Victoria taking out the Division One title over Western Australia, ahead of Queensland and New South Wales.
Division Two, made up of South Australia, ACT, Tasmania, and for the first time Arafura - which included players from the Northern Territory, Far North Queensland and Papua New Guinea – saw ACT claim victory over South Australia in the grand final.
Courtney Gum (NSW) won the Debbie Lee Medal - Division One best and fairest while Rachael Killian (South Australia) won the inaugural Melissa Backhouse Medal as the competition’s
rising star.
